We had a great day here in VA. +- 20 of us enjoyed a beautiful day of tips on sheep judging, a picnic lunch, lots of good conversation, old friends and new friends, and selling some good sheep. Over half the sheep offered sold. The states of NC, VA, TN and GA were represented by new breeders and "old hands" and sheep sold to all 4 states! Thank you to all who supported the Southeast Tunis Breeders Field Day.

May 12 was a day for good information, good fellowship, and good Tunis!

Report from Louise Dunham:

The Cassell family had everything ready for us...coffee, donuts and a nice lunch and lots of facilities to pen, display and handle the sheep. It takes guts to allow a bunch of strangers to go thru every animal on your farm...or it should be pride because we saw a lot of good animals.

Some brief notes...Paul Cassell talked about marketing strategy regardless of your market...consistency, a complete package, honest presentation, and a plan. Several questions were asked about marketing wool and the ethnic meat market.

Don Schrider, a former NTSRI director, and now the communications director of American Livestock Breed Conservancy, discussed his part in the creation of the Tunis brochure. He explained that the committee had decided what Tunis traits were the most prized and those were listed as "ideal"; what traits weren't going to be tolerated and those were labeled "disqualifications" and the remainder of the traits were simply listed as faults and up to the breeder to accept or breed out of their flock with no judgment from the committee about these faults. This committee used the longer version of the standard as a source and their many years of raising Tunis. Don also talked about the added value of Tunis meat being sold to restaurants and individuals. I hope others in attendance will add their impressions and what they remember. I, personally, enjoyed meeting new people and discussing new ideas and opinions...

Thanks to Barb, Leon, Paul and Maryann Cassell for their hospitality.

This lamb was sold to Zach Ulbig of Baltimore, Maryland!  A February ewe lamb...one of many consigned by Darling Tunis of Ohio, Randy & Lynette Powley of TN, Niese's Big Time Tunis of Ohio and Mom's Tunis of VA.

Paul Cassell spoke on "Marketing Sheep" and other sheep topics

Evaluating Tunis Lambs - Leon and Barb Cassell had lots of ways for the sheep to be displayed and handled...it was an easy time for all!

Thanks to the Cassell family for hosting the event.
